We once encountered a rattle snake slithering around in a mountain suburb. It went into someone’s backyard, under the fence. Our dogs were on a very short leash. We called 911 since it was in someone’s yard, and we couldn’t get anyone to answer the door. The county was out in minutes, and sadly, they decapitated it with a shovel – I thought perhaps they would release it in the mountains or something. However, much as I like snakes, a poisonous snake in your backyard is dangerous, especially to pets and children who may not know otherwise.

Yes, we always catch and release, ever since the experience with the fire department coming and doing exactly what you experienced.
