For the past few months, we flower-hikers have been avidly watching the growth of the Humboldt lilies in select locations throughout the Santa Monica Mountains. Yesterday V. and I were delighted to spot our first blooms of the season. Happy dance!

A lovely drawing! Have you heard about Alexander Von Humbolt ? He was an amazing 18th and 19th century explorer who I imagine first named these lovely lilies.

Yes, this lily was named for him. Apparently more species are named after Humboldt than after any other human being!
