tea towels

teatowels

Ironing our linen tea towels is one of my weekly pleasures. They have all been either gifted to me (many of them handprinted by my sister) or purchased as special souvenirs. Most are stained and showing signs of work and wear. As I iron them, I’m grateful for their utility and for the memories they bring. I feel kind of hugged by them, and in the act of gentle pressing and folding, I hug them back.

hermit crabs

There were lots of hermit crabs scooting around in the tide pools. A pair of them got into a bit of a scrimmage; actually, one attacked the other, who fought back for a bit then scuttled away, with the larger one in pursuit. They were in shells of the same species, and the crabs too seemed to be of the same species—their “feet” were light-coloured. I wonder what the fight was about. Maybe they were just feeling crabby.

new iron

I’ve hardly left the house since coming back from Christmas at San Diego. Sure, I’ve walked the dog and visited the farmer’s market, but mostly I’ve been cocooning. It’s been chilly and overcast, grey gloom obscuring the sunrises and sunsets that are often so spectacular at this time of year. A good time for books and blankies and simple sewing projects as the year winds down.

hard by a great forest

I recently perused NPR’s list of best books from 2024, sorting by the tag “Seriously Great Writing”. I put a handful on hold at the library and have been reading them as they come in. I really liked this one, set mostly in Georgia (Europe). Time to put a few more on hold!

looking closer

gumnuts

I thought I knew the eucalypts on our block! I went out to observe and record the rate of fruit (gumnut) drop, and to my surprise learned that adjacent trees are actually different in significant ways.

This process, and learnings, delighted me … and engendered even more questions, to be explored in the future.
