wildlife crossing

The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing—the largest of its kind in the world—is currently under construction nearby. I climbed the hill out back and saw it in the distance, spanning the 10-lane 101 freeway. Decades in the planning and fundraising, this vital structure will protect biodiversity across the region by linking undeveloped land that‘s currently fractured by major roads. It’s hoped that it will help prevent the extinction of our threatened mountain lion population. The crossing is due to be completed some time next year.

I arrived early for my meeting, so sketched the view of the water tank-topped hill in Malibu Creek State Park. This hill was the filming location of How Green Was My Valley, which won a slew of Academy Awards in 1941. It famously beat out Citizen Kane for Best Picture, a decision that hasn’t aged well.

Pittenweem

Pittenweem is a picturesque Scottish fishing village in the East Neuk of Fife, dating back to medieval times. The name derives from Pictish and Scottish Gaelic and means “the place of the caves”, referring to St Fillan’s cave.

According to Charlie Flinders, it has the best fish and chips in the world.

Pittenweem hosts one of the most-loved art festivals in Scotland, attracting about 20,000 visitors over eight days each August. Many artists have re-discovered the charms and the light of the area, and have moved to the village, creating a vibrant artistic community. Makes me want to visit!
